Via Astrologica

The Czech Republic has been experiencing a conflict between the president and the prime minister, practically ever since the new prime minister was elected. The president first demanded that the newly elected prime minister resolve the conflict of interest issue and then refused to nominate government minister Andrej Babis.¹ The next chapter in this animosity is the competence dispute over who should have attended the NATO summit in Ankara.² In this post, I will analyse the horoscopes of both officials in terms of whether they are capable of friendship or perhaps only hostility.

Both in Brief

President Pavel’s Almuten Figuris is Venus, sitting in Libra. His 8th house is very strong. There are the Sun and Venus. The Ascendant is in Aquarius with its ruler, Saturn, dwelling in Capricorn. Therefore, he is a sanguine phlegmatic person. With Antares on his Medium Coeli and Aldebaran on Imum Coeli, he appears to be a serious contender in politics, and his military career is emphasised (he holds the rank of general).³ According to his natal chart, he is a diplomat. Spica and Alphecca are conjunct his Mercury, giving him good communication and oratory skills and the ability to inspire crowds, which he proved at the beginning of the year during the conflict with the Minister of Foreign Affairs which caused mass demonstrations in support of the president in the whole country.⁴ Aquarius highlights his pro-democratic views and commitment to justice, while Scorpio suggests that this guy should not be underestimated, as he will consistently strive to defeat his opponents.

The prime minister, Andrej Babiš, has more Virgo and Mercury qualities in his natal chart than I have ever seen. Mercury is his Almuten Figuris, the ruler of the Ascendant and Medium Coeli (Gemini). His Sun sits in Virgo. In addition, the Ascendant is influenced by the behenian fixed star Alkaid. Regarding the Ascendant, according to Aphorism 37 of the Centiloquium by Pseudo-Ptolemy, those with an Ascendant in Virgo or Pisces are very likely to be rulers in their kingdoms.⁵ It is intriguing that Babiš has this configuration in his horoscope. He lost the parliamentary elections but won a majority in the following elections and became prime minister again. Aphorism 37 illustrates how teflon-like he is as a politician. His strong Mercury, in addition in the 12th house, shows that he is able to manage communication skilfully. He knows exactly what he means, even if he sounds silly. What he says is not random, and there is likely a reason behind it.

In summary, they have something in common, and there is potential for friendship, but how this potential may unfold is hidden in their natal charts.

Synastry

The concept of compatibility between individuals, reflected in their natal charts, occupies a distinct place in astrological tradition, where it is known as synastry. One formulation of this principle appears in Aphorism 33 of the Centiloquium, which states that friendship and hostility depend on the positions of the luminaries in both natal charts.⁶ So, let’s then have a look at the positions of the luminaries in the natal charts of both individuals.

In the charts above, it can be seen that President Pavel’s Sun is in Scorpio, which is the same sign as Prime Minister Babiš’s Moon. Both of their Suns are also in a close sextile. Pavel’s Moon does not see Babiš’s Sun, so their luminaries cannot communicate with each other. In addition, the Ascendants of both politicians are in disjunct signs. In summary, there is not much in common between these two individuals. Based on these factors, it appears that there should be at least cold indifference between them, or even the kind of hostility that would cause them to actively work against each other. The minor similarities mentioned above, arising from their temperaments and individual chart traits, are not enough to outweigh the lack of common ground in this synastry analysis.

Progressions

The analysis of natal charts is only the first part of synastry analysis. A person is not born a certain way and does not remain that way for the rest of their life because their character and experiences change over time. Therefore, the type of relationship someone will have with another person also depends on the stage of development and life they are currently in. Therefore, it is always worth using prognostic techniques to obtain a deeper and wider picture of how two people will react to each other.

In the secondary progressions of both politicians, the situation has not changed much. Their Ascendants are in disjunct signs, so there is no connection between them. Their Suns are in a sextile, but their Moons are in opposition. Interestingly, it appears that the President and the Prime Minister are at such a stage in their lives that their conflict is not rooted in differing views, but rather in pure emotional aversion. They are not merely hostile to each other. They genuinely cannot stand each other.

NATO Summit

The conflict between the Czech president and prime minister is ongoing and is unlikely to end as long as both remain in office. One consequence of this conflict was the sending of two separate Czech delegations to the NATO summit in Ankara. It is intriguing that this summit took place during a Mercury retrograde, which does not favour effective communication. This was definitely not the best moment for a meeting of important people speaking different languages.

Conclusions

In synastry, one usually looks for evidence of genuine friendship or, more often, love. However, in the context of politics, what matters more is the capacity to enter into an alliance. However, for this to happen, at least a minimally positive vibe between the two individuals is needed. In this particular relationship, according to astrological principles, that vibe is currently missing, even though these two could potentially make good friends. This remains only a potential that cannot be realised due to the aspects between the natal charts of President Pave and Prime Minister Babiš, especially at this moment. This case shows that without analysing the charts’ progressions and relying solely on a comparison of natal charts, one could easily draw mistaken conclusions.
